| The Big Chill just got a darn sight BIGGER! |
| 21/05/2008 |
![]() News now that The Big Chill is descending. But no need to stock-up on firewood, arm yourself with a sub-machine gun or put on that twenty year-old sheepskin from Camden Market. No, we’re talking The Big Chill festival, which this year boasts a line-up as hot and steaming as a fresh ‘pat’ from the rear-end of a Jersey Cow.
The festival, taking place from the 1st to 3rd of August at the stunning Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire, will feature everything from comedy duo The Mighty Boosh to 2008 rock n roll hall-of-fame inductee, Leonard Cohen; with some ‘Dub-Action Painting’ thrown in for good measure.
Taking to the Stages will be legends including Buzzcocks; rising talent including Swedish beauty Lykke Li, a live performance from DJ Trentemoller; and ex-Moloko electro-pop songstress, Roisin Murphy. Oh, and as previously mentioned, Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt of Mighty Boosh fame will have a few special surprises in store.
Of the legendary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, Festival Music Programmer, Guy Morley, beamed: “We’re massively excited about this year’s line-up – we’ve brought together a wide variety of contrasting artists, tastes and styles under the Big Chill banner. Leonard Cohen in particular is a fantastic coup, and his Sunday night finale will be an incredible moment for the festival.”
Of course, the beauty of The Big Chill is that the tents and the independent areas of the festival have bills just as cum-inducingly (sic) sweet as the main stages. The 2008 Club Tent offers seven different labels and brands, with representatives spinning and scratching their way through set after blinding set.
House-label ‘Need2Soul’ includes 1Xtra’s Benji B and Chicago based luminary Ron Trent. The Rizla Tent includes Kid Acne, Greg Wilson and Annie Nightingale, whilst ‘Pick Your Own’ will host the incredible Alabama 3 (unplugged), and ‘Soundcrash’ will include Roots Manuva and DJK.
Now entering its fourteenth year, The Big Chill will offer a far more diverse and creative festival experience; due in part to co-curation with The ICA, Roundhouse, BFI Southbank, and Underbelly. This means that as well as the wide range of music on offer, the festival will be a veritable feast of visual displays.
Headlining ‘ICA Presents’ in the ‘Media Mix Tent’ will be the innovator of dub, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry; who together with Adrian Sherwood will be delivering bass-heavy dub whilst painting a live interpretational art-piece to be auctioned for Amnesty International.
Then there’s The Big Chill Nights, featuring a fire-eating, tap-dancing midget, Adam Buxton of cult TV show ‘Adam and Joe’, and the Fast Show’s Simon Day. Oh, and ‘Words in Motion’ will offer film, literature and poetry events, including the debut of Icelandic band Sigur Ros’ homecoming tour documentary, Heima.
The Big Chill founder Katrina Larkin commented: “This year’s Big Chill feels like embarking upon a new journey of discovery whilst keeping a familiar sense of magic! Working with partners such as the ICA and BFI Southbank has added a new dimension to the festival; and I get a quiver of excitement even thinking about August.” As do we Katrina… As do we.
